Inspired by a true story, Pilate's Cross follows John Pilate, his sardonic imaginary pal Simon and lovely new friend Kate as they investigate the cold case mystery of a murdered college president. In too deep to wash his hands of the mystery, Pilate risks his life to uncover the truth of what happened in 1963 and why it's just as deadly today.

This is the first in the "John Pilate" mystery series. It is the revised, second edition. The second and third books, Pilate's Key and Pilate's Ghost, are available now in ebook or paperback.

Pilate Cross A John Pilate Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) J Alexander Greenwood John Edmondson Caroline Street Press Books

Life has dealt John Pilate a series of blows that he can't quite overcome before the next one comes along. He is a believable, sympathetic hero struggling to gain his footing in a new job in a very small college located in a very small college town. He gets embroiled in the town's old murder-suicide story more out of boredom than interest until events bring him into the middle of a mystery that is very much alive and kicking. He has to solve the mystery before it kicks him right into an early grave.
The characters and rural environment are well drawn, and the plot is one that held my interest throughout. I look forward to reading the sequel.

Note to the Author: Please tell Mr. Pilate to stop smoking. I worry about his health.

Pilate Cross A John Pilate Mystery Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) J Alexander Greenwood John Edmondson Caroline Street Press Books Reviews

My experience with J. Alexander Greenwood’s award-winning John Pilate Mysteries is not exactly in the right chronological order—having first read the third and latest one (‘Pilate’s Ghost’), I had to “hunt down” the rest of Greenwood’s works, and ‘Pilate’s Cross’—the first book—turns out to be an immensely enjoyable read.

In ‘Pilate’s Cross’, John Pilate tries to unearth the facts surrounding a cold case—a murder/suicide mystery that first shook the small college town back in 1963. John Pilate himself doesn’t seem fully equipped with solving the case—saddled with depression and hurting deeply from the death of his marriage, Pilate is one of those proverbial walking wounded. When he’s off his anti-depressants, a personal nuisance nags him Simon, whose acidic quips feed off John’s deep-seated doubts. Yet, the amazing thing is, despite his various weaknesses and the whole black sheet of limited information he is up against, John plods on and even strikes up a new friendship. And the way John stumbles into one clue after another is simply a literary demonstration of how a first-rate author can completely grip you in a choke-hold of suspense.

Even in this supposedly first book, Greenwood’s writing is dead-certain and extremely confident—the author never hesitates in plunging his story into further complication in order to make it more edge-of-your-seat exciting, and yet, he emerges from it as cleanly and as self-satisfying as possible.

As long as John Pilate is in it grappling with his personal issues, the least of which is his imaginary pal Simon (who never fails to provide the acerbic wit and occasional comic relief when the going gets really tough), I’m pretty sure this book series is going to have a long list of sequels down the road. Overall, ‘Pilate’s Cross’ is a brilliant debut, a rollercoaster of a yarn that is fully capable of making hours seemingly disappear as you read it. A solid five-star rating for this one.
Did not like the curse words in it, so therefore did not read all of it.
I found Pilate's cross to be an entertaining, interesting, and a very quick read. I am looking forward to reading Pilate's Key.
I was not sure what to expect when I started reading this book but was intrigued by the title and plot. As it turns out, I really enjoyed the mix of mystery and wit and could not wait to read the second book in the series. If you have not check them out, I highly recommend them!
I downloaded Pilates Cross, after a friend recommended it- It was a great airplane read-a fast-paced plot, decidedly quirky characters, which are my favorite kind, and colorful descriptions that put the reader in the middle of of the frozen Midwest during the gray days of winter and early Spring- Greenwood has obviously lived in that part of the country!

This story is a fast read, that leaves the reader wondering what other adventures will befall John Pilate and his not- quite-real sidekick Simon- is Simon a hallucination? A ghostly help-mate? Or, as Greenwood describes, a vision born of skipping necessary medication? You hope this isn't the end of John's story-- He naturally attracts calamity and adventure - so I anticipate another tightly - crafted story starring John Pilate-
This book is a very intriguing mystery with well developed characters and a quick moving plot. The beginning of the book develops the characters, but it doesn't take long to get into the meat of the story. I agree with another reviewer that said the book could have been longer. There are a lot of characters in this book and some of them and their storylines could have been developed more and this would have only added to the story. The author does a good job of making you feel like you are part of the story and setting.

The only part of the story I found a little unrealistic was the "Simon" character. I don't think that really added anything to the story.

Going to go get the sequel now...
Although I enjoyed J. Alexander Greenwood's novel Pilate's Cross, I have to admit that I do have one complaint it was too short. Mr. Greenwood came up with and developed a nice story line, with interesting characters, while managing to squeeze in layers of suspense, action, and even a little romance. I really enjoyed that Mr. Greenwood made the book more than just a "who done it" mystery, with his connections to civil rights, segregation, and small town politics. The problem is, I wanted more. I wanted to spend more time with Pilate, Simon, Kate, Kara, and Scovill. Pilate's Cross could have been twice as long and still remained the enjoyable, fast paced story it is. Nice job!
